Algebra I
Grades: 8 and 9
Prerequisites: C average in Pre-Algebra

Algebra I is designed to prepare students for higher level mathematics courses such as Geometry, Algebra II, Algebra III/Trigonometry, and Calculus. The purpose is to help the student develop an understanding of the fundamental concepts of Algebra. The course encourages students to understand, apply, synthesize, and evaluate algebraic processes. The objectives of the course correlate with the National and State Standards.

This course presents new and more advanced Algebraic concepts. The course stresses both structure of Algebra and application of concepts. This course serves as the preparation for Algebra III / Trigonometry.

The first part of this course will focus on Algebra and Pre-Calculus concepts, while the second part will focus on Trigonometric concepts. The course is designed for students continuing in mathematics and also for those that may not pursue a mathematically related field.

Applied Math I
Grade: 9

The Applied Math I course is offered to the student who does not choose the academic mathematics program to fulfill mathematics graduation requirements. The content of this course emphasizes basic mathematics skills and problem solving in consumer and career applications.
Since many enrolled in this course may not pursue an education beyond high school, the course stresses basic mathematics skills to enable the student to function competently in mathematical situations that they may encounter as adults. Emphasis is placed on practical applications of the basic math skills rather than on mathematical theory. This course also serves as a basis for further high school mathematics courses.

Applied Math II is designed to reinforce the basic concepts of Algebra and Geometry. The purpose is to help the student develop the fundamental skills needed for post-secondary associate degree programs or post-secondary careers. The course encourages higher level thinking skills and correlates with the Pennsylvania State Standards.

This course is designed for twelfth grade students. All basic mathematical concepts are reinforced and PSSA Standards are emphasized. The basic consumer math will prepare student for everyday life.

Business Math is a full year course for students who have an interest in developing math skills related to vocational business situations. Course content includes maintaining a checking account, payroll computations, calculating discounts, interest, depreciation, and an introduction into accounting. Students who are interested in owning their own business will benefit greatly by completing this course.

Calculus
Grade: 12
Prerequisite: Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry (or taking) (C average)

The course is designed for students enrolling in a post secondary program that requires a Calculus component. The course begins with a Pre Calculus review of Algebra III and Trigonometry. The focus will be on the characteristics of functions and their associated graphs. Limits will be introduced for the development of the derivative. Techniques for finding derivatives as well as the applications of the derivatives will be explored. The course will conclude with anti- differentiation (integration) techniques and applications.

This course is for ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students that have successfully completed Algebra I. It is a balance between theory and applications and is designed for average to upper level math students. Formal proofs will be used along with deductive and inductive reasoning. Concepts of space geometry are integrated with plane geometry.
