Penns Manor Area School District Where Bright Futures Begin

Least Restrictive Environment

It is the mission of the Penns Manor School District to provide all students a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), access to regular education environments, and access to grade level general education curriculum (Least Restrictive Environment LRE).  The regular education classroom is the first placement considered for the Individual Education Program Team.  The IEP team, which includes the parents, begins with the general education classroom, with the use of Supplementary Aids and Services.  The team must exhaust the supplementary aids and services in the regular education classroom before consideration of a more restrictive placement.  Federal, State, and Penns Manor policies ensure supportive programs, services, and supports.

What is the Least Restrictive Environment?

The Least Restrictive Enviornment (LRE) is part of the Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA).  Under 1412 (a)(5) of U.S. Code Title 20, children with disabilities should be educated in general classes to the "maximum extent appropriate"

What are Supplementary Aids and Services?

"Supplementary aids and services means aids, services, and other supports that are provided in general education classes, other education-related settings, and in extracurricular and nonacademic settings, to enable children with disabilities to be educated with nondisabled children to the maximum extent appropriate in accordance with §300.114 through §300.116."
